Graduated from the University of Wales, Swansea with a degree in Analytical Chemistry in 1995, which provided the opportunity to enter the materials industry as a Process Chemist working for Calsonic Llanelli Radiators, an automotive component manufacturer, utilising both an aluminium brazing process and traditional copper and brass technologies to produce heat exchange products. With many processes heavily reliant on chemical interactions Chris rapidly became experienced in the engineering activities that underpinned the activities of the company, experience which enabled the seamless transition into the engineering department of the company and taking a role of a Process Engineer. Bringing a paradigm breaking type philosophy into the role quickly singled out Chris as an individual that would identify, propose and implement successful, rewarding changes to the company’s operations that propelled Chris’ career into engineering management resulting in the control of one the engineering activities of one of four of the production units, and responsibility for approximately £20m worth of capital equipment and a team of skilled engineers and tradesmen.
The passion for continuous development and the desire to extend his education firmly into engineering brought the opportunity to return to Swansea University and to complete his doctoral studies within the Engineering Doctorate scheme where Chris looked into technology to develop a new range of thin metallic coatings through a physical vapour deposition process, working with Corus Strip Products UK, now Tata Steel Europe.
Chris joined Tata Steel following his successful completion of his doctorate and worked in new product development where he was successfully developed and organic-metallic hybrid coating to provide a new substrate for automotive safety cage steel components, and to also provide experience and knowledge to Swansea University Masters and Doctorate students in a research management role. Chris’ experience in high volume production and engineering management has resulted in him taking a role within SPECIFIC, where he is responsible for the introduction of pilot line activities and providing the safe working environment for the production of the emerging functional coatings.
