Professor Dave Worsley wins prestigious IOM3 prize

Professor Dave Worsley

Professor Dave Worsley has received a prestigious award in recognition of his distinguished work in the field of materials science and engineering.

Professor Worsley, who is Head of the Materials Research Centre at the College of Engineering at Swansea University and Research Director of SPECIFIC, has been awarded the Hadfield Medal and Prize by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), recognising his distinguished achievement connected with iron and steel industries.

The SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledege Centre now encompasses a £50m research and delivery portfolio for functional coatings applied to construction materials, with the aim to create new building materials from steel and glass that can generate, store and release energy at the point of use, turning buildings into power stations.

Professor Worsley was the Director of the Steel Training Research and Innovation Partnership, (STRIP) a £8m ESF and Industry funded research and training programme, which over a 6-year period provided training for more than 120 technologists at postgraduate level.  This partnership has been supported by around 22 companies with international presence but a footprint in Wales including Tata, BASF, Akzo Nobel, and Vale INCO, and is now transforming into a Materials Academy with metallurgy training and research at its core.

He is also author and co-author of 124 refereed scientific publications on coated product development and has a suite of patents on functional coatings for energy generation.

He said: “I am delighted to have been honoured by this award. It really recognises the achievements of all the staff and students at SPECIFIC and on the STRIP course, who have worked hard to develop materials and find solutions that have had, a will go on to have, a big impact in industry.”

IOM3 confers awards for personal achievement, for published work and for contributions to the profession and also has award categories for students, technicians and local societies.
