Sêr Cymru Solar is a £7m initiative to establish a research cluster focused on the development of low cost, large area photovoltaic technologies. Based at SPECIFIC, with strong external collaborations including the solar research programme at Imperial College London, it is led by Professor James Durrant, and co-directed by Professor Dave Worsley and Professor Jenny Nelson.
The other senior members of the project are Senior Lecturers Dr Matthew Davies and Dr Trystan Watson (Swansea University), Sêr Solar Research Fellows Dr Matt Carnie, Dr Cecile Charbonneau (Swansea University) and Dr Wing-Chung Tsoi (Imperial College London) and PV Business Development Manager Dr Silvia Villarroya-Lidon (Swansea University).
The overall aim of the Sêr Cymru Solar team is to create a solar energy research centre to deliver world leading scientific research and to support the growth of a new printed solar manufacturing industry. The Sêr Solar team works closely with the SPECIFIC project. SPECIFIC will use the pilot line facility to scale up Sêr Solar research ideas to make scalable solar applications with a view to creating clean, green high value products of a global standard into a reality. This collaboration between academia and industry is intended to progress research from the laboratory bench to the factory floor and thus pave the way for to accelerate commercialisation and the creation of a major UK solar manufacturing industry centred in Wales.
