Every day we get enough energy from the sun to power our planet for 27 years

Work With Us

"At SPECIFIC we've created a dynamic environment where people and ideas thrive. We're very good at what we do, but we can't do everything ourselves. That's why we're actively looking to collaborate with innovative organisations that share our vision and can work with us to commercialise smart coatings"

Jan Bell, Business Development Director

SPECIFIC's culture is built around partnership. We work with a large range of organisations – including multinational corporations, innovative SMEs and universities – to scale-up new technologies, develop supply chains and identify routes to market.

By exploiting functional coatings and assisting in the commercialisation of new disruptive technologies, SPECIFIC aims to generate value for our partners, for the UK and for Wales.

We are therefore keen to help organisations progress their innovations in line with our “Buildings as Power Stations” vision.

We also welcome opportunities to work collaboratively with partners on other projects, including those wishing to participate in Welsh, UK, and European funding collaborative R&D initiatives.

What We Offer

SPECIFIC is the UK's largest centre focused on the development and manufacturing scale-up of novel coatings and materials that can generate, store and release energy.

Our core capabilities include state of the art Research and Development facilities, our Pilot Manufacturing Resource Centre, internationally recognised expertise, and a progressive approach to commercialising and demonstrating technologies.

Within the centre and in our network we have a unique mix of people comprising researchers, engineers, business development, IP and commercialisation professionals as well as architects and construction specialists – a vast network for companies to access.

Our technology is showcased in a dynamic “Concepts” area, where more than 2,000 visitors have helped to influence the direction and focus of our R&D and commercialisation activities.

Partner Model

Our partner model demonstrates an extensive network of collaborators, who work with us to grow:

  • Expertise – capability and knowhow
  • Market pull – customers, customer requirements and specifications
  • Funding – both cash and in-kind
  • Industry engagement – industry demand, credibility

We are able to work flexibly with businesses of all sizes and can engage additional support from public sector partners as appropriate (including funding tools within the Welsh and UK collaborative R&D landscape, such as A4B (Wales only), Innovation Vouchers, SBRI, SMART, and H2020) to create value-added products and services.

Academic Partnerships

SPECIFIC has built a World-class research network to deliver innovative functional coatings to industry. The University partners are vital in terms of the inventive steps and research rigour required to prove the concepts. We actively seek partners from across the science and engineering disciplines to solve the key challenges that currently limit the application of functional coatings to buildings. To illustrate, a substantial network has been developed to consider a variety of distinct third generation photovoltaic technologies including Imperial College London (OPV), Oxford University (perovskites), Glyndwr (Cd-Te) and Bath and Bristol (CZTS). In addition fundamental materials chemistry (Bath and Bangor) and photovoltaic test methods and accreditation (Loughborough) are key competencies that the network approach brings. Similarly, in energy storage, partnerships exist with Sheffield and Nottingham in battery and solar thermal technologies. It is only by working together that we will be able to solve the research challenges that take emerging technology to the factory floor.
